Are Bleeding Gums A Problem?
One of our goals is to help our patients have excellent oral health. It is important for patients to regularly check the state of their oral health and be mindful of any changes. One issue that you may notice on occasion is bleeding gums. This is typically seen when you are brushing and rinsing your mouth. It is not unusual for bleeding gums to occur from time to time; however, if you notice this being a frequent issue, it is best to visit our office to be sure no problems have developed. Some possible causes of bleeding gums can include:
Poor Oral Hygiene
If you are too rough when you are brushing and flossing your teeth, you may be causing trauma to your gums, resulting in bleeding gums. Be sure to brush using gentle strokes, and do not forcefully push the dental floss into your gums. If you are unsure how to clean your teeth properly, we will be happy to help you during your next visit.
Gum Disease
There are not many warning signs to alert individuals that they may be suffering from this common condition, but bleeding gums is one of the few. Gum disease occurs when there is a buildup of plaque and tartar along the gumline.
Medications
You might be surprised at the number of prescription and over-the-counter medications that can cause bleeding gums. It is extremely important for patients to share any changes to their medical history, including all medications, each time they visit our office. Some medications may need to be altered or stopped for a period of time before treatment is received.
If you experience bleeding gums, it is important not to worry, but it is important to visit us soon. If you are in St. Marys, GA or the surrounding area, we recommend calling our office to schedule an appointment. We can perform an examination to determine the exact cause and recommend a treatment plan. We look forward to helping get your oral health back on track.
