Why Are Teeth Sensitive?
Sensitive teeth can make life difficult. Not only do they make it difficult to eat and drink, but caring for teeth at home can be uncomfortable as well. Occasional tooth sensitivity is usually nothing to worry about. However, if the sensitivity persists, it may be a warning sign that there’s trouble brewing.
Why Teeth Are Sensitive
Tooth sensitivity occurs when the outer layer of tooth enamel erodes, exposing the sensitive dentin underneath. Dentin has tubes that go to the center of the tooth and the soft tissues within, allowing temperature changes and sugar to reach the nerve. That’s why it is painful to eat ice cream or drink orange juice.
Occasionally, sensitive teeth are genetic, but most of the time, the problem is brought on by:
- poor oral hygiene
- tooth decay
- overly aggressive brushing
- drugstore teeth whitening products
- persistent clenching and grinding (bruxism)
- receding gums
With treatment at our office and proper at-home care, tooth sensitivity can be managed.
What We Can Do for Sensitive Teeth
The first step in getting relief from tooth sensitivity is to visit Parker & Pennington Dentistry for an examination to find the cause. We will determine the most effective treatment plan to alleviate the pain and discomfort. Based on our findings, we may recommend:
- Dental bonding
- Deep cleaning
- Fillings or crowns
- Dental sealants
- A custom mouthguard
We may also recommend additional care to manage the sensitivity, including:
A professional cleaning: A cleaning may help with sensitivity caused by excess plaque along the gum line and between teeth. It also gives the patient a clean slate from which to start with their at-home oral hygiene routine. As the patient continues to practice good oral hygiene at home, the sensitivity may disappear.
Changing oral hygiene habits: Poor oral hygiene is the top cause of sensitive teeth. If a patient does not brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time and floss at least once a day, they are more likely to experience sensitivity as oral health problems arise. Likewise, if the patient is brushing too aggressively or using anything but a soft toothbrush, they are damaging their tooth enamel. It’s more effective and easier on teeth to brush gently and with a soft toothbrush. The same goes for flossing. We always recommend taking time to be gentle for the best results.
Avoiding store-bought whitening products: The long-term use of drugstore whitening strips, toothpaste, mouthwash, or any oral care product containing charcoal can damage tooth enamel. OTC whitening products can be harsh and abrasive, which contributes to enamel erosion. For a whiter smile, we always recommend consulting our experts. We offer safe, effective, professional teeth whitening treatments.
Limiting acidic foods and drinks: This is the most challenging for patients, as most people enjoy citrus fruits and juices, coffee, tomato sauce, and vinegar-based dressings. However, anything with a high acid content can exacerbate tooth sensitivity. It is best to limit these foods and beverages or choose less acidic alternatives to keep sensitivity from ruining the eating experience.
